Darius Olaru Rangers transfer ruled out but explanation could be red herring

Darius Olaru will be a name familiar to Rangers fans who keep up to date with the many names linked with the club.

The Romanian midfielder has been mooted as a potential target dating as far back as January last year and seems to have been mentioned in every window since.

Olaru plays for FCSB but wasn’t involved as Gers beat his side 4-0 in the Europa League recently.

He is currently involved in a stand-off with the club after controversial FCSB owner Gigi Becali confirmed he had turned down a contract offer with an improved wage on offer.

Craig Moore on Darius Olaru to Rangers chances

Rangers News told you yesterday, with confirmation form Romanian sources, that there is no significant update to be had on Olaru’s situation at FCSB.

But the link to Ibrox has resurfaced after Heart & Hand host David Edgar namechecked the 26-year-old in his daily update on 13/11/24.

Former Gers defender Craig Moore reacted to the latest speculation last night and gave his take that he things the player would be out of the attainable price ranger.

He does like Olaru as a player though and would he happy if it was something the club could get done.

He told the Go Radio Football Show: “I think that interest will probably cool pretty quickly in terms of the prices. You’re talking £4 or £5million.

“I think that puts Rangers out in regard to the investment that they don’t have.

“Attacking midfielder, 26 years of age, Romanian international. So a handy enough player and at a good age.

“In terms of Rangers’ financial situation probably doesn’t mean that it becomes a likely opportunity.”

Could Rangers afford Olaru’s release clause?

However, as we told you yesterday, Olaru has a release clause in his FCSB contract of £4.2m, which any club can trigger in January.

Much has been made of the apparent lack of finances at Ibrox but John Gilligan has insisted there WILL be money available for Philippe Clement to strengthen his squad.

Recruitment chief Nils Koppen has also said they have identified areas of ‘concern’ in the squad that need attention.

Given that fees like £3.5m were spent on the likes of Nedim Bajrami, £4.2m wouldn’t seem like too much of a stretch if Rangers do want Olaru.
