Danish football has been struck by the coronavirus as fears continue to grow about how the infection will impact Rangers and Scottish football.
Danish Superliga side Brondby have quarantined 13 people including a player and their assistant coach after former Denmark international Thomas Kahlenberg was diagnosed with the infection.
The club’s 21-year-old defender Joel Kabongo and assistant coach Martin Retov have been quarantined after Kahlenberg attended Brondby’s match with Lyngby at the weekend.
Kahlenberg is said to have shaken hands with former teammate Kabongo whilst Brondby director of communications Christian Schultz confirmed another 11 members of staff are affected [BBC].
Lyngby have also quarantined three players for a fortnight, with Kahlenberg said to have contracted the virus in Amsterdam last weekend.
According to De Telegraaf Ajax also have three staff members in quarantine, including former Denmark and Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen, who met with Kahlenberg.
Authorities in Denmark have now asked for all events with over 1000 people to be postponed or cancelled and advised nationals to avoid hugging and kissing each other [The Local].
There’s been plenty of talk about the situation in Scottish football with the latest reports claiming the government could award teams titles early to prevent greater outbreak [Daily Record].
The SFA has also set up a rapid response group [SFA] which will act quickly in the event of a growing outbreak of the virus in Scotland.
There were also earlier fears about Rangers’ Europa League last 16 return leg with Leverkusen in Germany [Telegraph].
The powers that be in Scotland will be watching what happens in Denmark closely as they monitor the ongoing situation with the virus.
Italy – the worst affected European nation – has announced that all sporting events, including Italy’s six-nations Rugby match with England, will be played behind closed doors until 3rd April.
Some matches, including the Italian Cup semi-finals, have already been postponed.
