Cyriel Dessers numbers point to encouraging Rangers signs

Whisper it quietly but, Cyriel Dessers is starting to show the type of goal scoring form that saw Rangers fork out a hefty percentage of their transfer budget on him.

At a reported £4.5m, the Nigeria international wasn’t cheap and was expect to be an immediate and almost like for like replacement for Alfredo Morelos.

A, very, slow start and some poor performances ultimately cost Michael Beale his job but is Cyriel Dessers doing enough to suggest that he could yet have a long-term future at Rangers.

Is Cyriel Dessers doing enough to win over Rangers fans?

When the Gers number nine’s contract is due to expire, he will be closing in on his 33rd birthday, a statistic that makes the decision to allow the previous manager to give Dessers a four-year deal all the more questionable.

Arriving off the back of an injury, Cyriel Dessers was consistently given the nod over Danilo so that he could play his way into fitness and yet, all it did was frustrate Rangers fans and cause self-inflicted problems.

However….

In his last four league games, since Philippe Clement arrived, he has three goals in four games.

Ronald de Boer said before Dessers arrived that he was a streaky player and it may be that the 28-year old is about to hit a purple patch.

The problem, as we saw against Livingston though, is that he should still be doing an awful lot more.

That, and staying onside would make a massive difference to how he is perceived.

The new Rangers manager has been playing, predominantly, with two wingers which means it is a three-way fight for the starting role up front.

It is a fight that Danilo is clearly winning on current form, even if he has missed a few chances himself too.

Philippe Clement can’t do anything about the fee paid for Cyriel Dessers, but what he has shown is that he can at least get more of a tune out of the summer signing than his predecessor managed.

It’s a start.
