Hearts boss Craig Levein has responded to reports linking Rangers with a move for teenage full-back Aaron Hickey by joking he’s planning a bid for Alfredo Morelos.
The Hearts boss also suggested that the transfer talk had conveniently surfaced as his off-form side prepare to face Rangers, whilst also revealing there are plans to offer the youngster a new deal.
Reports earlier in the week suggested that Hickey was to be recommended to Rangers by new sporting director Ross Wilson [Scottish Sun].
“Who do we play at the weekend? We’re going to put an offer in for [Alfredo] Morelos tomorrow,” said Levein [Edinburgh Evening News].
“I’m taking that one with a lump of salt.
“I’m still working on [a new contract for Hickey]. I want to just try and get it done with his dad and then I’ll talk about it.”
That suggests that while there’s been plenty of paper talk about a move for the on-form Hickey, Hearts remain hopeful he’ll commit his future to them in the coming days.
Despite only being 17, Hickey has put in a range of stand-out performances for the Tynecastle club and hit a deflected winner against rivals Hibs to earn Hearts’ only Scottish Premiership win of the season.
Rangers aren’t the only side reportedly tailing the progress of former Celtic youth Hickey.
Premier League giants Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the progress of the youngster [Daily Mail].
