In the coming seasons, the best signing Rangers have made in the modern era might not be one which actually plays on the pitch.
Alfredo Morelos might be generating talk of being worth £25m+ [Scottish Sun], whilst Rangers may well have invested heavily in Ryan Kent [Sky Sports], but in Ross Wilson, the club appears in very capable hands.
A man with contacts across the footballing world and someone who comes across as no-nonsense as he does ambitious, the former Southampton sporting guru could be Rangers’ best signing in a generation.
Ironically, Wilson will perhaps be judged by the signings that the club make during his tenure.

That’s despite the club’s new sporting director reiterating that his job isn’t all about recruitment, pointing to the fact Rangers already have very capable staff working in that department.
That said, Wilson does think Rangers “is going to be attractive to players in the markets we are going to be looking at” [Evening Times].
For Wilson, this is about developing and improving Rangers’ image and bringing the club’s operations in line with that of an elite footballing department.
From the Academy, from which success is deemed “crucial” by Wilson, to the standards in and around Ibrox and the Hummel Training Centre, to women’s football, improving our medical department and of course the investments in the playing squad, Wilson’s role is all-encompassing.

For all the talk of investment on the pitch, Wilson’s appointment may well prove to be amongst the shrewdest pieces of business we’ve conducted off it in a long time.
