As Rangers snap up two pre-contracts from the Scottish Premiership for next season, could we yet move for another? Maybe a rival captain?
Aberdeen’s Graeme Shinnie is often seen as the Dons leader and talisman, and may well have all the credentials to impress Steven Gerrard.
The versatile Scotland midfielder has been a ferocious presence in the heart of Aberdeen’s midfield for years. Shinnie joined the Dons back in 2015 and has now cemented himself as a vital part of their side.
But his contract is up in the Summer and he’s free to speak to other clubs. The Scottish Sun have claimed that he’s interesting Championship outfits Brentford and Hull City.
Might Rangers fancy a pop at the former Inverness Caledonian Thistle man?
Shinnie is a combative, creative player with a mean left foot. He can play at left back or in midfield and he loves a battle. The midfielder has also got four Scotland caps to his name, so would add international experience to the side. He’d also command no transfer fee.
Would Graeme Shinnie get in the team? That remains to be seen. The signing of Kamara might just have knocked this one out of kilter. We’ve got plenty of combative options in the middle now. Jack, Arfield, McCrorie, Rossiter, Kamara. Even Greg Docherty, who is set to return next season and has been superb at Shrewsbury.
But just imagine the faces of the Dons fans if Rangers took their main man. Not that Rangers haven’t plundered the North East for a rival captain before.
