Rangers have made contact with Shrewsbury over Greg Docherty, but not for the reason you would think.
In recent times, Steven Gerrard hasn’t spoke about bringing Docherty back to Ibrox. Many Rangers fans, however, are open to the idea of a return to the club for the box-to-box midfielder this month.
Despite that, however, the former Hamilton man has been progressing well in England’s League One. With 27 appearances to his name this season and seven goals, he’s having a terrific year away from Ibrox.

Rangers, however, have been in contact according to Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts. Speaking to Shopshirestar, Ricketts confirmed Rangers have been keeping tabs on the midfielder.
“I think so (he will stay), there’s been no mention of him going back at all.
“There have been a couple of conversations (with Rangers), not myself, and they’re really pleased with how he’s progressing.
“They sent him here to learn and progress and that’s exactly what is happening. I think they’ve come out and said it’s better off him to stay here and keep progressing like he has done because he is playing very well.”
Docherty has been the best of the bunch
Out of all of Rangers’ out on loan stars, Docherty has been the pick of the bunch.
On a near-weekly basis, the midfielder has been making his mark down in League One. He’s one of the first names on the Shrewsbury team-sheet, and has progressed exactly how Rangers would’ve envisioned so far.
Fortunately for Docherty, however, it looks like he’s set to stay at the club until he end of the season. Bringing him back to Ibrox would be pointless at this stage, as he would still find himself in the same position as last time.

Having just come off a huge win over Celtic, Gerrard won’t be dropping any of his midfield stars soon. The likes of Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, and Scott Arfield hold key midfield positions at the club, and remain the manager’s first-choice.
It looks like this idea of a Docherty return can finally be put to bed.
