As the Alfredo Morelos Rangers transfer saga rumbles on, the introduction of Portuguese giants Porto as potential suitors has made things interesting.
In fact – alongside long-term suitors and four-times bidders Lille – there are five clubs now being linked to the Colombian firebrand whose future at Ibrox remains on a knife-edge.
But with Porto reportedly recouping £35m (€40m) for the teenage striker Fabio Silva, could this propel Rangers’ former Europa League foes into a move for the Colombian?
After all, the Primeira Liga outfit have some catching up to do with old rivals Benfica who have spent close to £73.5m improving their squad this season.
The Lisbon side have invested heavily in their side as they look to close the gap with Porto and reclaim the Primeira Liga title.
Benfica broke the Liga NOS transfer record to sign Almeria’s Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez in a £21.5m (€24m) deal.
They also spent at least £18m (€20m) on highly-rated Brazilian winger Everton, £13.5m (€15m) on German striker Luca Waldschmidt and signed ex-Spurs centre-half Jan Vertonghen on a free on the same day [TransferNexus].
Benfica also reportedly paid another £18m (€20m) to bring Brazilian attacking midfielder Pedrinho to the club ahead of the new season.
As Águias also spent £2.5m (€3m) to bring right-back Gilberto to the club as they made yet another South American signing in the window.
As a result, could current title holders Porto open their own chequebook to ensure they keep hold of their Portuguese crown next season?
It’ll cost a cool £20m (€22.5m) if they want to add Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos to their arsenal.
