As Steven Gerrard calls for Rangers to make signings with his squad being stretched by injury, the Ibrox club have been left frustrated in their pursuit of numerous targets.

Any move for Preston midfielder Daniel Johnson remains up in the air, whilst the club have taken former Arsenal winger Nathan Tormey on trial this week.

But in the hunt for a quality option with loads of energy in the middle of the park, could a potential move in the Premier League open the door for the Gers to sign a major target from this window?

Rangers have been heavily linked with a move for 26-year-old Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram, the box-to-box midfielder the perfect solution to a perceived lack of drive from the middle of the park.

A robust, creative, all-action midfielder with an eye for goal and enough ability to compete in the Premier League, this would be considered a major signing for the Ibrox club.

After being linked to Rangers by the Athletic, news broke that the Gers were willing to wait until January to get their man with Lundstram’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

Lundstram also played the full 90 minutes of the Blades opening day defeat to Wolves, proving he remains highly thought of by Chris Wilder.

But Sheffield United are in the market for another midfielder and have been heavily linked with a move for Reading’s ex-Chelsea youth John Swift.

Swift is highly regarded down south and the technical midfielder’s future with the Royals is about as clear as Lundstram’s is with Sheffield United.

Amid reports linking the Bramall Lane club to Swift, Wilder admitted he was “frustrated” [Yorkshire Post] at a lack of movement in the transfer window as a general.

Reports suggest that Reading are also demanding considerably more than £6m for their star man this summer.

Similarly to Rangers, Sheffield United may have to bide their time to get the players in which they feel they need to compete this season.

But could Rangers be waiting to pounce on Lundstram if the Blades do manage to finalise a move for their own man in the middle this summer?
