Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed that contract talks with Croatian international Borna Barisic are “progressing really nicely”.

The Ibrox boss was talking about contracts as he announced that some good news could well be on its way regarding Jermain Defoe [Rangers] in the coming days.

And whilst he’s confident the move for the legendary England striker is almost done, Gerrard is also happy with how discussions with the Croatian left-back are going.

“Borna’s talks are also progressing really nice,” said Gerrard [Daily Record].

“It’s not days away but it’s a lot closer. Borna is happy and we’re happy with him.”

The news will come as a considerable boost to Rangers fans with the much-reported interest in the creative full-back in this transfer window.

Steven Gerrard confirmed that AS Roma were reportedly interested in the player [Herald], whilst the likes of Napoli were reportedly offered his services by an agent close to the player’s father [Area Napoli].

The number one choice at left-back for Croatia, for whom he’s gained 12 caps, Borna has been reborn in a Rangers jersey this season and is now one of the club’s key players.

The 28-year-old has laid on 14 assists in 28 appearances this season, including two in the 2-1 Old Firm win at Celtic Park and another vital one in the 1-0 win over St. Mirren.

A dead-ball specialist and someone who is playing with his heart on his sleeve, it’s no surprise Rangers are clearly eager to tie down one of the club’s biggest assets.

Barisic himself has reiterated that he is “fully focused” on life at Rangers [Premier Sports].
