Rangers starlet Ben Williamson is closing in on a loan move to Raith Rovers, according to The Courier.

The Gers have high hopes for Williamson, particularly after he took to senior football so quickly during his maiden loan spell over the second half of last season at Arbroath.

After securing the Young Player of the Year award at Gayfield Park, the 20-year-old featured in 2021/22 pre-season for Rangers before being sent out to Livi on a season-long loan.

A variety of issues ensured it was tough for him to get any momentum early on, but he was still receiving opportunities, making five Premiership and two League Cup appearances.

However, since being sent off for a reckless tackle on Dundee United’s Declan Glass two months ago, he hasn’t seen a single minute of action.

Williamson talked to RangersTV earlier this month about his time so far at the Tony Macaroni Arena and spoke about his desire to get back into the side.

Football Scotland reported on Monday that Rangers were planning to take matters into their own hands in January, though, by recalling him before sending him out to Raith Rovers.

And now, The Courier reports that talks are at an ‘advanced stage’.

It’s asserted that the move could even be completed in time for Williamson to make his debut in the Fife derby against Dunfermline on Sunday.

Right call from Rangers?

This looks like a good move for Williamson, after a difficult few months in West Lothian.

He’s paid a heavy price for his sending off in October, only making one matchday squad since completing his suspension.

Perhaps, in hindsight, the decision to send him out to a Premiership club was a hasty one after his impressive but brief stint at Arbroath.

It should be easier for him to find a place in John McGlynn’s starting XI and if plays regularly at Stark’s Park, he’ll be better equipped for a go at the top flight next season.

Williamson is under contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2023.
