Footage has emerged of Sky Sports reporting that Rangers did ask fans to disperse from Ibrox Stadium via the tannoy system in a clip which supports the club’s response to the Scottish Government.
Rangers were resoundingly criticised by a variety of politicians including SNP deputy first minister John Swinney – who branded fans a “disgrace” – and first minister Nicola Sturgeon – who described the scenes as “disgraceful and selfish”.
Green party leader Patrick Harvie came in for major criticism for his rant over the situation where – like Swinney and Sturgeon – he criticised the club’s handling of the situation.
All three believe that Rangers did not do enough to prevent the gatherings taking place.
However, Rangers have bitten back with a detailed list of meetings, communications and warnings they gave the government regarding the potential for a title party.
The club also pointed to the fact they continually asked fans to disperse via the tannoy system at the stadium with the club believing there was a “dereliction of duty” from the government regarding properly preparing for the situation [Twitter].
To back this up, Sky Sports News reporter Charles Paterson was clipped confirming on the channel that Rangers were asking fans to move on.
It’s hard to know what more Rangers could’ve done – especially considering the league was won because Celtic dropped points to Dundee United – other than what they’ve already outlined.
The reality is the Scottish Government knew that this had a high likelihood of taking place and failed to properly prepare for this most obvious eventuality.
