Rangers fans have reacted to the comments of Scottish Green Party politician Patrick Harvie after he suggested football should be shut down following scenes of supporters partying in George Square.
A political maelstrom has unfolded after Sunday’s events which saw Rangers fans gather in great numbers at Ibrox and George Square to celebrate the club’s historic 55th title.
Rangers have taken a barrage of criticism from figures within the SNP such as John Swinney and even Nicola Sturgeon but bit back against the suggestion they should’ve done more to prevent celebrations.
A letter penned by chairman Douglas Park to first minister Nicola Sturgeon was leaked this afternoon with the Ibrox chairman strongly denouncing the coverage of the government over the last few days.
On top of that, the Park claimed the government has made “inaccurate” claims about the level of involvement Rangers had over the situation with claims of meetings and continued dialogue mentioned in the letter.
Harvie failed to recognise the comments of Douglas Park as he unleashed a tirade on the Ibrox supporters who visited George Square.
“We’d all like to go to mass gatherings. Some people would like to go to a party political conference – I’d like to go to a beer festival – but we don’t,” said Harvie [Daily Record].
“The organisations and businesses that run such events have had to stop until it’s safe. Why should a football club be any different?
“A football club which, let’s be honest, seriously did nothing to prevent dangerous mass gatherings in its name, gatherings which trashed the public realm, risked the safety of front line workers as well as posing a public health threat.
“Surely it’s not enough just to appeal to the good sense of those who’ve shown that they don’t care?
“Why are we even contemplating letting this business carry on in the weeks ahead when we know it’s likely to generate a repeat of the scenes we saw at the weekend?”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would then reiterate that the upcoming Old Firm clash with Celtic on March 21st was under review by the powers that be in government.

The entire thing is threatening to be blown out of proportion as Rangers fans count the cost of celebrating a title win 10 years in the making.
The club’s supporters appreciated being defended by Douglas Park and are right behind Rangers in calling out the misleading comments of government in recent days.
