Clement tight-lipped but Rangers blow not expected to halt US billionaire’s Ibrox bid

Ben Davies looks set to bring the curtain down on two disappointing seasons at Rangers.

But Philippe Clement is in no position to confirm nor deny it.

Reports emerged heading into the weekend that Ben Davies is a target for Birmingham City with the 29-year-old defender potentially heading out on a season-long loan.

Given Davies moved to Ibrox in a bumper £4m deal from Liverpool in the summer of 2022, Rangers will rejoice at getting this high-earner off the club’s wage bill.

According to Salary Sport Rangers will save £27k per week or £1.4m for the year if Birmingham are to cover Davies’s wages – and it’s not like they can’t afford them.

The League One side are backed by US billions after hedge-fund manager Tom Wagner bought the club out alongside the likes of famous NFL star Tom Brady.

For Rangers, what might be viewed as chump change to the Blues’ American backers can almost certainly be better spent elsewhere in the Gers’ squad.

But after an injury to Leon Balogun in the thumping victory over Ross County, Philippe Clement has been asked if the brakes might be pulled on Davies’ exit.

Will Leon Balogun be available v Celtic?

Rangers defender Leon Balogun had only just returned to the fold v Ross County before he was being subbed off the pitch.

Pulling up in the game and being replaced by Mohamed Diomande just before half-time, Gers fans were fearing the worst.

Speaking after the comprehensive 6-0 victory over Ross County, Philippe Clement was asked about Leon Balogun’s injury situation.

And the Rangers manager is confident that the 36-year-old centre-back will be available for the club’s Scottish Premiership trip to Celtic Park next weekend.

“Leon got a knock and he hurt his neck,” Clement told Sky Sports. “That was an unlucky one.

“Because he was good in the game and last week he missed so I wanted to get him game rhythm.

“I don’t think it will be a big thing for next week, so I think in a few days he will better it’s just his neck is totally blocked now.”

Rangers manager gives update on future of Ben Davies

In the wake of the injury, Gers manager Clement was also asked about the future of Ben Davies.

The Rangers manager had previously told reporters that he wouldn’t be going into details as the club prepared to welcome the Staggies.

Speaking after the match, Clement was also unwilling to part with any details and claims that he won’t know that the transfer is sanctioned until it finally is.

Swerving any suggestion that an injury to Leon Balogun might halt Davies’ exit, Clement wasn’t in the mood to go into details.

“I don’t know if there’s an agreement between the two clubs and Ben,” said Clement.

“I will hear at when it’s the right time about that. I didn’t get this message yet.”

Philippe Clement has also been clear that if Ben Davies is to move out of the club this summer then Rangers will have to sign a replacement.

The Gers have reportedly had a bid turned down for Brazilian defender Kaiky as Almería try to convince the centre-back of first-team opportunities in Spain.

Kaiky started for Almería in the weekend’s win over Tenerife and the situation remains live as the transfer window heads into its final furlong.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has admitted that he expects to be ‘busy’ over the coming days with Gers fans eager to see the squad strengthened.
