‘Quite amazing’… Chris Sutton stunned Rangers haven’t given 29-year-old new contract

Chris Sutton admits he can’t believe Rangers haven’t offered John Lundstram fresh contract terms yet this season.

The central midfielder has been an integral part of Philippe Clement’s Rangers team and has been heralded by the likes of Barry Ferguson and Steven Davis as the driving force in the side.

Lundstram was key in the win over St Mirren on Saturday as his pass unlocked the opposition defence to play through Cyriel Dessers, who calmly rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

That takes his tally up to four assists this season and his fantastic performances got Sutton wondering why on earth Rangers aren’t moving to secure his future at the club.

Clement revealed last week that there has been a hold-up in that regard which is down to ‘finances’, with Lundstram free to discuss terms with other clubs this month if he so wishes.

Sutton asked former Rangers striker Kris Boyd on Sky Sports after Rangers’ victory over St Mirren: “What’s going on there? Can you not tap into your contacts, Kris? He’s (Lundstram) out of contract in the summer and it is quite amazing that a key player…what’s happening?

Boyd then interjected and said: “Well this is what we’re speaking about for the millionth time. The manager needs to look at it and say it’s not good enough for the football club to see players at that level to be coming out of contract and that it won’t happen under his remit going forward.

“You hope that is true because you speak about Celtic and the way they are able to get players tied up. You look at (Matt) O’Riley, (Cameron) Carter-Vickers is another one. I think Rangers need to find a way to get John Lundstram tied down.”
