Rangers have sold Charlie McCann to Forest Green in a deal which appears to have shades of the Ibrox club’s own arrangement with Bayern Munich loanee Malik Tillman.
Ex-Man Utd kid McCann reportedly turned down a new contract offer from Rangers to go on the hunt for more first team minutes in League One and it’s an admirable decision from the midfielder.
But Rangers have reportedly inserted some clauses into the 20-year-old’s contract south of the border which could see the Ibrox side benefit on and off the pitch.
Whilst the Gers have officially listed the fee involved as “undisclosed” – with reports claiming Forest Green paid £350k for the player – Rangers have confirmed future clauses in the deal.
These include a “significant future sell-on percentage” whilst the club retain “return options and matching rights” on the player in the future [Rangers].
This means Rangers will have an option to return for Charlie McCann in the future should he progress as hoped with Forest Green.
Shades of Malik Tillman in Charlie McCann Rangers deal
Rangers fans following the club’s permanent interest in loanee Malik Tillman will see shades of the reported structure for the Bayern talent in the sale of Charlie McCann.
Ibrox sporting director Ross Wilson was lauded for the structured move for Tillman, which reportedly includes a £5m option-to-buy come the end of the season.
But should the Gers exercise the right to buy Malik Tillman, and whilst Charlie McCann has not moved on loan initially, then there are similarities in the rights Bayern will retain over the player.

This reportedly includes a buy-back option should the USA international excel at Ibrox and other clubs around Europe become interested in his services.
It’s smart business from Rangers in both senses and let’s hope these deals allow both Charlie McCann and Malik Tillman to reach their potential and have an impact at Ibrox.
Meanwhile, Rangers reportedly face competition in the hunt for Asmir Begovic.
