Former Bayern director Michael Reschke has praised Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson for striking an “intelligent” deal for loanee Malik Tillman.

Rangers have struck a loan-to-buy deal with the German-born USA international but it’s the details and structure of the deal that have caught Reschke’s eye.

Rangers have an exclusive option-to-buy Malik Tillman at the end of the loan deal, something which looks sensible given how impressive the attacking midfielder has been.

But on top of that Bayern also retain a buy-back option such is how highly they rate the midfielder, with the view from within the elite European outfit that Malik Tillman could yet make it at the Bundesliga champions.

If Malik Tillman continues to impress for Rangers, especially on the Champions League stage as he did against PSV Eindhoven, it may even result in Bayern buying the player back come the end of the season.

This means Rangers would buy the player for the agreed fee and then Bayern would pay a higher fee to have him return to the club.

It in essence means that no matter what happens, Rangers are likely to benefit both on the pitch and off it and it highlights how impressive the deal the club has struck really is.

Rangers director praised for Malik Tillman deal

Former Bayern sporting director Michael Reschke was the man who brought Malik Tillman to the club as a youngster – signing him as a 13-year-old alongside brother Timothy – so he is well aware of the talent the kid possesses.

Speaking exclusively to the Athletic – in an interview well worth a gander in its entirety – Reschke paid tribute to Ross Wilson for having the nous to strike this impressive deal.

“When I spoke to Malik for the first time I could see in his eyes that he was focused and wanted to develop. From the first moment he joined, he was a starting player. He was a natural on the pitch. When he is playing, he is like a fish in water,” said Reschke.

“Everyone involved in the deal deserves huge compliments. I was surprised by the move as usually top talents like Malik would go to Austria or another German side and it’s not common for a Scottish club to do this sort of deal.

“It’s unusual, so I compliment the scouting system and the sporting director at Rangers for the decision.

“I was very surprised when I read it. I thought, ‘Oh, there is someone intelligent there to do this deal’. It’s a very clever deal.”

Rangers signed Ross Wilson from Premier League Southampton in October 2019 and the club’s sporting director is clearly majorly respected across European football.
