Charlie Adam understands difficulty of getting into Rangers’ team

Charlie Adam’s return is yet another transfer story that’s picking up pace. He has, however, acknowledged how difficult it would be to break into the Rangers side.

Adam now currently plies his trade at Stoke City after a five-year association with Rangers between 2004 and 2009. During that period at Ibrox, he picked up over 85 appearances, and was part of Walter Smith’s three-in-a-row winning side.

Rangers have been linked with returns for players such as Steven Naismith and Steve Davis in the past. Added to that, Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty have returned from the team of old heroes.

And Adam has stated he would be delighted to return to Ibrox, but understands how difficult it would be to make an impact.

“If it was an option, it’s something. It’s a wonderful club and I had great times there. It’s a big big club still as well.

“If it was an opportunity to go back, great. But I think it would be difficult for it to happen because of the amount of players they have and things like that.

“Steven’s there and he seems to be enjoying it, he’s getting the right results. There’s something going on and you want to be part of something special.”

Not a crowd-pleaser

Some deals have a knack of getting fans’ morale up just by hearing about the speculation. The likes of Davis and Allan McGregor are fondly thought of at Ibrox, and they’re two examples of how this strategy could work.

But not many are taking to the idea of Adam on board. Despite his title success under Smith, he was certainly one of the weaker players of that era. He managed to score just 18 times for the club during the five years he spent at Ibrox. Considering how often he got forward under Smith, that was a tad disappointing in terms of a return.

You also have to wonder where Adam would fit in the Gerrard system. If Rangers are able to tie up Davis in January, or a player similar, then there would be no place for Adam.

The midfielder clearly has a strong affection for the club he grew up supporting, but his football skills aren’t even at the level they used to be.

Adam has had success since leaving Ibrox, however. He was part of the famous Blackpool side that came up to the Premier League and made a real impact, before moving to Liverpool. Whilst it didn’t work out for the Scottish international there, he still has a fond career to look back on.

Hopefully for many Rangers fans, however, this is a deal that just doesn’t go through.
