There’s no denying that a Steven Davis return to Rangers would excite supporters, and he’s just proven why.
Davis played all 180 minutes of Northern Ireland’s last two matches. A trip to the Republic of Ireland was followed by a home defeat by Austria in the Nations League.
And whilst results didn’t particularly go Northern Ireland’s way, Davis certainly didn’t look out of place. He was one of the standouts in both matches for Michael O’Neill’s men.

Showing his true box-to-box nature, Davis showed limitless energy and a strong array of passing. He continues to dictate a lot of Northern Ireland’s possession, and you can see the leadership he has over much of the squad.
What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Davis has been relatively starved of action. The Southampton midfielder hasn’t featured in any of the last four match-day squads. That’s just part of a bigger run of seven Premier League matches without an appearance.
Despite only playing six minutes of league action this season, Davis is clearly keeping himself fit and healthy. The midfielder looked so match-sharp, and Rangers must now be thinking of making their move.
The big question mark
That was the big question mark over Davis when the speculation started. Did he have the fitness levels required to make an immediate impact? He answered that question with authority over the last week.
The unfortunate thing now is the fact that he’s likely not going to feature between now and January. Between now and the January window, the midfielder is going to have to keep himself sharp once more.

It’s not certain as of yet whether Rangers will make a move, but you have to wonder why they wouldn’t. The Gers are looking for two fresh midfielders to join their ranks during the Winter break. At face-value, Davis looks like a god-send.
The two midfield targets are part of a four-man plan for Rangers in January. The Gers are also looking for a striker and another addition to their squad. Steven Gerrard has already brought 15 players to the club in what has been a total overhaul.
Davis, however, has proven that he should be number 16.
