Steven Gerrard was coy in a press conference which ended just minutes before Kyle Lafferty was announced.

Perhaps he didn’t want to jinx it.

The big Northern Irishman has re-joined his boyhood heroes from Hearts and he couldn’t be happier about it.

12 signings already but still in the hunt

Gerrard also has his three forwards. Each offering something different. Each of a high enough standard to compete. Not that his window shopping is done just yet.

The scouser has completed 12 signings so far for Rangers and more are likely to be on the horizon.

In the press conference Steven Gerrard praised the job done by Nikola Katic and the man behind him, Connor Goldson. He even said he was lucky to have him, before Goldson went on about how quickly the boys at the back have gelled.

That doesn’t mean Gerrard has stopped looking for reinforcements.

Connor Goldson and Allan McGregor, alongside Croatian Nikola Katic, have formed a solid formation at the back for Rangers.

A specific style of CB on the radar

Moves for the likes of Jake Cooper, Kean Bryan and Jack Simpson have come to nothing so far. But their similarities show there’s a style of player Gerrard wants.

The manager is looking for a tough, capable, ball-playing, young British centre back to provide competition for Katic and Goldson.

Gerrard won’t be rushed into making a signing though. He’s made it perfectly clear that whoever comes in must be up to the task.

With little over a week remaining in the Scottish window, expect Gerrard to find his man. He needs to – Rangers are extraordinarily light at cente back.

With Murphy out too, Rangers need to sign a reinforcement in left wing. Jordan Jones is far and away the fan favourite for the role.

Whatever happens, Rangers will surely be a few bodies heavier come September.
