Writing for the Sunday Post, Celtic legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has heaped praise on Steven Gerrard as the Rangers boss closes in on ending the club’s major trophy drought.
The Gers are currently 23 points clear at the top of the Premiership table, with Celtic now only holding two games in hand following their defeat at home to St Mirren on Saturday afternoon.
Mathematically, the league isn’t over and Gerrard himself is keen to avoid premature celebrations, but it’s now a question of when rather than if Rangers win the title.
Dalglish isn’t surprised that success is nearing for the Gers boss. In fact, he says it’s been a matter of time ever since his appointment.
“There was never a shadow of a doubt that Steven was going to deliver success to Rangers, and he is now very close to getting that all-important first trophy over the line,” he wrote [Sunday Post].
“He has improved his team year on year, and the strides they were making under him – domestically and in Europe – were obvious.
“The Ibrox board were quite right to give Steven a third season, and they are about to be rewarded for the belief they had in him.”
Dalglish has a big connection with Gerrard from their Liverpool days, but it’s still rare to see a Celtic legend heap praise on a Rangers manager.
Yet, the consistent excellence of the Gers this season and the contrasting struggles of the Hoops have left things very clear.
The balance of power has shifted and as Dalglish points out, the Rangers manager deserves major credit for the remarkable turnaround that has taken place across the last three seasons at Ibrox.
While Gerrard won’t be celebrating until the league is officially won, he has made passionate comments about his ‘dream’ of bringing success back to Rangers.
