Celtic incident highlights Rangers “double standard” in media coverage

Rangers and their supporters are often told to suck it up when it comes to Alfredo Morelos, the media coverage around the striker, and retrospective punishment.

The Colombian striker has gotten himself in his fair share of tussles over the years in Scotland and has felt the brunt of both press pressure and the disciplinary process in recent seasons.

But when leading Celtic players aren’t subject to the same media witch hunt for off-the-ball incidents all it does is highlight the disparity in press coverage.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull – quite incredibly – only received a yellow card for a blatant kick out at Aberdeen midfielder Dylan McGeouch during the Parkhead club’s 1-1 draw at Pittodrie.

The spiky kick out came with Celtic 1-0 down and frustrations visible as the Parkhead side headed for yet another miserable result in what’s been a miserable season for the club.

Reports are claiming that Turnbull could face a ban but the public fall-out – set to nuclear every time there’s an incident with Morelos – is passing by without a whimper.

Ordinarily the SFA used to wheel out the claim that a player who was yellow carded can’t have that upgraded but this season we’ve seen that rule abolished regarding Morelos.

In the clash with Dundee United the striker’s yellow card for a clash with Arabs defender Mark Connolly was upgraded for violent conduct and this should very much be the same in this instance.

But what chance of you got of equal treatment when the Record’s coverage of the match defends Turnbull by claiming “there isn’t much strength in his kick”?

It’s little wonder Alfredo Morelos’ representation regularly takes the opportunity to berate the system and the treatment of his client.

Not that this apparently discouraging Alfredo who is unfortunately used to this kind of treatment by now but finally the striker will get his hands on the league crown this season.

According to one leading report, Alfredo isn’t done yet either and “wants to stay” at Rangers for a crack at the Champions League next season.
