Celtic hero praises Rangers forward Morelos, plays down Old Firm drought

Celtic hero John Hartson has praised Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, as quoted by the Daily Record.

Between fans of Glasgow’s big two, the debate continues to rage over whether Morelos or Edouard is the better player.

Yet, despite his ties to the Hoops, Hartson hasn’t just toed the line and gone for the French U21 international.

Instead, he recognises the qualities of both players and even moves to play down the classic Celtic fan slight on El Bufalo, that he is yet to score in an Old Firm.

“I don’t want to say which is better,” said Hartson, as quoted by the Daily Record. “Edouard is more proven as he’s done it on a more consistent basis. He’s scored in Old Firm games, including a brilliant winner.”

“Edouard seems to have done it in bigger games but Morelos is consistently banging them in for fun and you can’t deny him.

“I don’t know if he has more to prove. He got 30 goals last season, a good return, so there’s no doubt the boy can score goals. The fact he hasn’t scored against Celtic means more of an opportunity to stay hungry and want to face them. Kris Boyd had a similar record but only got one against Celtic.”

Verdict

Celtic fans consistently lean on his Morelos’ Old Firm drought as an apparent clincher in this debate.

Yet, here we have a former Celtic striker asserting that it’s not all that important and that in fact, the Colombian forward may be successfully using it as motivation.

When you strip away the hyped-up Old Firm failures, it’s clear who’s the superior performer and perhaps that’s why Hartson stopped short of giving a simple verdict.

Morelos is the most clinical operator in Scotland right now and he has a major part to play if Rangers are to secure silverware this season.
