Bristol City fans are actually buying into Rangers boss Steven Gerrard links

In arguably the most ridiculous transfer story of the window so far, links claiming Bristol City want Rangers boss Steven Gerrard at Ashton Gate just won’t go away.

The Ibrox gaffer was said to be on a four-man shortlist for the job at the Championship outfit but any proposed move was eventually rubbished by the likes of the Express and talkSPORT.

The suggestion from the Daily Mail that the Robins had instead opened a dialogue with ex-Brighton boss Chris Hughton appeared to all but kill the story dead.

But then Bristol Live would emerge with an exclusive which claims Bristol City’s billionaire owner Steve Lansdown retains hopes of signing Gerrard as he looks to reach the Premier League.

So much so he’s made the Gers gaffer his “number one target”.

Rangers fans have been pretty much laughing this one-off since the beginning.

The Ibrox club is one of the world’s most prestigious and the job leading it one of the biggest in football. With all due respect, Bristol City pales in comparison.

Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff have just signed a new contract at Rangers until 2024 and the Ibrox gaffer has consistently reiterated that he has no interest moving elsewhere.

And yet – true to form given the perception of Scottish football down south – there are Bristol City fans taking to Twitter responding to the reports.

“Surely not”, I hear you cry, but alas, there are plenty out there who genuinely believe that the Rangers manager would trade immortality for mediocrity:
