BBC Scotland have announced plans to air a special documentary looking at the life of Rangers legend Walter Smith after his passing this year.

The Ibrox legend passed away in November at the age of 73 and the BBC are set to look at the legendary former Gers boss’ “life in football” on December 30th.

The documentary will include interviews with the likes of Graeme Souness, Sir David Murray and Sir Alex Ferguson and promises to be an emotional watch for bluenoses everywhere.

Sir Walter – as he was affectionately known by Rangers supporters – was a giant of the footballing world and that showed in the immense tributes paid to Smith after his passing.

Walter Smith had huge influence across the game but it’s his time at Rangers were he is most remembered, the iconic manager winning 21 trophies across two spells at the club.

A former footballer with Dundee United, Rangers was Walter’s boyhood club and whilst he never played for the Gers, his legacy is woven into the fabric of Ibrox.

Rangers’ greatest modern manager, the respect held for Walter amongst some of the biggest names in football speaks volumes about his influence.

A recent memorial service held in Walter’s honour at Glasgow Cathedral drew some of the biggest names in the sport as Ally McCoist, Sir Alex Ferguson and figures close to the man paid tribute.

In an iconic year for Rangers – where the club managed to win that legendary 55th title and their first for a decade – the year will be tinged with sadness on reflection come the bells.

In Rangers circles there was no bigger achievement than that legendary Scottish Premiership crown in May, but no bigger loss than Walter Smith in November.

The BBC Scotland documentary promises to be a fitting tribute to the Rangers manager and coming up to the turn of the year a chance to reflect on the legacy of Walter Smith.

Meanwhile, Rangers star Gio van Bronckhorst admits he knew little about a leading Ibrox star but that he is now a fan.
