Van Bronckhorst admits he knew little about Rangers star but is now a fan

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has admitted that he knew very little about Scott Arfield before he was appointed manager but is now a big fan of the 33-year-old [RangersTV].

After signing from Burnley in the summer of 2018, Arfield quickly established himself as a key player for Steven Gerrard.

He brings energy and tenacity, connects the midfield to the forwards and has a knack for scoring important goals.

The Canada international had slipped down the pecking order prior to Gerrard’s sudden departure to Aston Villa but he’s been used regularly by Gio during his first month in charge and is currently one of the form players at Ibrox.

Rangers boss van Bronckhorst praises Arfield

During Tuesday’s press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s Premiership fixture against St Johnstone, van Bronckhorst lauded Arfield for grabbing his attention in training.

“I like Scott,” he replied after being asked about Arfield’s role [RangersTV]. “You already know some players but I didn’t know Scott really well. Of course, I had seen some footage, but that’s why it’s important for me to be on the pitch to be with the players and to look in their eyes to see their qualities in training sessions but also in the games.”

“I think Scott is a player who really uses his strength in the system we play, so for me he doesn’t need to play any differently than the way he is used to. He can just play in the role that suits him.

“I think if you have that in your team and players can play their natural way, they are always more effective. In the last few games he’s played really well. Scott is doing really well with the things we want him to do.”

Big future for Scott Arfield under Gio?

Arfield’s contract is up at the end of the season but he recently made it clear that he’s happy at Ibrox.

The ball is in Rangers’ court regarding an extension and if he can continue to impress Gio over the coming weeks and months, it’ll surely only be a matter of time before he’s offered a new deal.

The midfielder has featured in every fixture since Gerrard’s departure and after this praise, it’d be a big surprise if he didn’t keep his spot in the starting XI for Wednesday night’s clash against the Saints.

Here’s our Predicted XI in full for the match.
