Ray Parlour has suggested that Steven Gerrard looks at signing ex-international teammate Ashley Cole for Rangers.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Debate Show [broadcast 27th November, 2018], Parlour touted the left back as a solid addition to any side in the Championship as well. Ashley Cole, 37, was up until this week still kicking a ball with LA Galaxy.

The 107 times capped ex-England hero also said he’s keen to keep playing if the right opportunity comes along. Could that be at Rangers? Parlour certainly thinks so.

‘I’m sure there’ll be lots of clubs interested. Stevie G is a great shout at Rangers,’ said Parlour. ‘I don’t know who their left back is at the moment but he would be great for the dressing room area.

‘He’s had a fantastic career and I think that he can do a job definitely for another season. ‘I’m not too sure about the Premier League, I’m not sure someone would take a chance on him in the Premier League, certainly the Championship.’

Is Ashley Cole the answer to issues with squad depth?

The ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender is a born winner. He won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners before controversially joining Chelsea. He would go on to win another league title and a Champions League at Stamford Bridge.

Rangers have been bemoaning a lack of depth at left back all season. Given his age, he wouldn’t get the nod ahead of Borna Barisic, but he might do a job there. Steven Gerrard has form signing experienced heads in Allan McGregor (36) and Gareth McAuley (38) too.

Is he the answer? I’m not convinced. But it’s certainly a left of field suggestion by Parlour.

It’s also not the first time that Rangers have been linked with an England legend this season.
