Manchester United’s all-time top goal scorer is currently lighting up the MLS with DC United and would be a huge coup for Rangers. Most people will laugh off the possibility of the 33 year old coming to the club.
And they’re probably right.
But those at the Daily Record have genuinely suggested there is a chance of it happening.
Huge wages, huge player, huge draw?
The entire basis of their link comes from one thing and one thing alone. Steven Gerrard.
They claim that if Gerrard made the call it is something Wayne Rooney would really consider. There is absolutely no doubt that Wayne Rooney would light-up the league here. He can score goals from anywhere, he’s a real leader on the pitch and he is a creative force as well.
He’s a top, top player with a a massive reputation.
The former Everton striker is also set to get one last cap for England in a match being called the Wayne Rooney Foundation International. The England all-time record goal scorer will appear as a substitute against the USA on November 15th.
But to me there’s very little chance of this happening and the links are tenuous at best. There’s no doubt he’s a top-class player but his wages would be astronomical at DC United. They’re hardly going to let him come play in a league of hatchet men for free.
Not to mention the fact that Rooney has a well-documented allegiance to our biggest rivals.
If Wayne Rooney is a Rangers player by the end of January, I’ll eat my words. But this is us getting into silly season already.
