Italian coach Antonio Conte has agreed to take over from Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham Hotspur amid murmurs of interest in Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, according to a report.
Portuguese manager Nuno was only appointed in the summer – amid links to Stevie G – and lasted the sum total of four months in charge in north London.
The sacking comes after Spurs were dismantled 3-0 at home by Manchester United and with the Premier League side 8th in the English top flight table.
“I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision,” said Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici [THFC].
“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”
It didn’t take long to see Gerrard’s name mentioned alongside the job with the Liverpool Echo mentioning both the Rangers manager and ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers as potential candidates.
Antonio Conte set to take over at Tottenham?
But as the news of Santo’s sacking spread so did emerging talk of the frontrunner to replace him with Italian coach Conte the clear favourite according to a spate of reports.
According to Goal, Conte will succeed Nuno at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an announcement expected before the weekend’s clash with Everton.
Life comes at you pretty fast – especially when you’re a football manager – and this might be part of the reason why Spurs only handed Nuno a two-year deal in the summer.

Conte is a former manager of Juventus, Chelsea, Italy and Inter Milan and boasts an impressive record of four Serie A titles, two Supercoppas, one Premier League, and one FA Cup.
The Tottenham job isn’t the only one Rangers manager Gerrard has been mentioned alongside this week with another Premier League side linked to the Ibrox boss.
