Andy Halliday wants Rangers to sign Hearts defender who is ‘better’ than current options

The Rangers left-back berth is coming under scrutiny after yet another season of domestic disappointment at Ibrox.

Brazilian rookie Jefte is being tracked by Chelsea, but the 20-year-old has probably played much more than anyone at Rangers expected this season.

Ridvan Yilmaz has also been, well, Ridvan Yilmaz, and spent the bulk of the campaign consigned to the treatment table.

Now, Andy Halliday has urged Rangers to sign one Scottish Premiership star who is ‘better’ than both players.

But the ex-Rangers midfielder, who deputised at left-back himself, has warned that it won’t help the Ibrox side catch Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Andy Halliday ‘would take’ James Penrice at Rangers

Rangers have already agreed a deal for Lyall Cameron with Dundee teammate Josh Mulligan also on the Ibrox club’s radar.

Whilst Dundee hope to keep Mulligan around next season, the Open Goal panel were discussing who else the Gers might target this summer.

Hearts left-back James Penrice was mentioned and whilst Halliday agrees he’s a better player than both Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz, the Ibrox hero claims Rangers also need to sign someone else.

”I still think they should sign somebody else,” Halliday said.

”I would take (Penrice). I think he is better than the left-backs they’ve got.”

Greg Taylor a ‘better player’ than Rangers duo and Hearts alternative

Rangers have been linked to Greg Taylor ahead of next season with the former Kilmarnock full-back’s contract set to expire at Celtic Park.

But if Rangers were to plunge for Penrice instead, Halliday warns that even Celtic’s soon-to-be back-up left-back is a better player than the Jambos defender.

”I think from Rangers’ point of view, and I know it’s hard because you’re signing unknowns, you’re signing players that have never played in the league,” Halliday explains.

”But if you want to catch Celtic you need to buy players that are better than Celtic’s players. I don’t think Penrice gets in above Greg Taylor.

“It’s hard, it’s going to be a long summer. I think you can look at it in a positive sense as well because there is going to be a lot of change. But they’ve got a lot to do to catch Celtic.”
