That Alfredo Morelos goal yesterday oozed class, confidence and capability.
Not only did the Colombian flick the ball in stylishly off his heel, but he hit the top bin with it too. He was sharp, well placed and such is his confidence, cocky enough to try it.
He also unselfishly set up the first goal for Ryan Kent and nodded it down for the Hearts keeper to palm out to Arfield. He’s been involved in everyone of our last six goals.
He’s vital to Rangers, so why are some people so reluctant to give him the credit he deserves?
Anti-Morelos commentary unwarranted
The anti-Morelos commentary hit peak ridiculousness after Rapid Vienna. The striker scored a double and won the penalty which James Tavernier converted. He was Man of the Match. It didn’t stop Bill Leckie claiming he played poorly.
It was the latest in a long line of stupid commentary on the talented striker. A prominent sports writer wrote a now deleted piece which had disappointing, ignorant, mildly racist undertones. The fact he’s Colombian shouldn’t be the focus of any debate on his ability.
The “poor temperament” argument holds very little water too. It’s actually very misleading. Granted Morelos has been sent off twice this season, but one of those times was rescinded. He’s passionate and fiery, but in no way dirty. Kris Commons even commented on his poor temperament prior to the Old Firm match, claiming he got sent off last season. Morelos didn’t.
Are rivals jealous, bitter, blind or a combination of the three?
With such widespread discontent for the striker, it makes you wonder if there are other motivations behind it.
Ignorance isn’t a credible excuse. The striker’s stats are hugely impressive and in purely footballing terms it’s difficult to argue against his influence. He’s scored 11 goals and laid on six assists already this season. Yet people still do.
And they couldn’t wait to bum up £40m man Dembele. They also can’t bring themselves to criticise or demand more of £9m man Eduoard.
To suggest this is about big games is ludicrous too. He’s just won the game for Rangers in two massive games this week. He also scored v Osijek and Maribor. The striker also got a hattrick away to Kilmarnock – a ground Rangers couldn’t win at last year.
There’s no player who comes under the same level of scrutiny in Scotland. Not that it seems to bother him at all. Or the fans, with whom Morelos has a special relationship.
A relationship which just gets stronger with every Alfredo Morelos goal.
