Steve Clarke could hand Aberdeen major boost in Connor Barron Rangers tribunal fight

Scotland U21 international Connor Barron has been one of the brightest sparks of Rangers’ season to date.

The tireless midfielder might only be 21-years-old but Barron has taken huge leaps and bounds already in his Ibrox career as he shoulders increasing responsibility in the middle of the park.

Rangers fans have been impressed by the level of commitment, energy and technical quality displayed by Connor Barron so far with the kid’s performances a cause for optimism.

And the rehoused Ibrox support aren’t the only ones either, with Barron’s displays reportedly turning heads in the corridors of power at Hampden.

Connor Barron on Steve Clarke’s Scotland radar

There’s a reason why Aberdeen fans were so salty that Connor Barron opted to move to Rangers at the end of his contract.

The Northeast club like to consider us their fiercest rivals and Barron has followed the likes of Ryan Jack and Scott Wright in moving to Ibrox in recent seasons.

It’s easy to see why Aberdeen are a tad upset too.

Young, hungry, with an excellent temperament and urgency on the ball, Connor Barron is an all-action midfielder who looks destined for the very top.

As a result, Scotland manager Steve Clarke is paying attention.

According to the Scottish Sun, the ex-Kilmarnock manager has been impressed by Barron’s performances at Rangers with the midfielder in line for a maiden Scotland call-up.

The Rangers star could be included in Clarke’s squad for September’s UEFA Nations League clashes against Portugal and Poland.

The report also claims that Barron narrowly missed out on a call-up to Scotland’s competitive Euro 2024 squad.

Aberdeen boost in tense Rangers transfer battle

There remains a fight over the fee Rangers must pay Aberdeen for Connor Barron, with the midfielder joining the Gers at the end of his Pittodrie contract.

With Barron coming through at the Dons, the Gers will have to pay a development fee for the ex-Pittodrie star which must be agreed upon by both parties.

Aberdeen have dug their heels in with the Dons ready to take the case to tribunal.

It is not clear if a Scotland call up would impact any decision surrounding how much Rangers must pay to sign Connor Barron.

But we imagine Aberdeen might well use it to strengthen their case.

The Dons have rejected a Rangers offer somewhere in the region of £525k and will likely be looking for seven-figures.

It also looks like Connor Barron could be about to follow in Ryan Jack’s footsteps in more ways than one.

With Barron coming into the team following Jacko’s summer exit, Ryan was also a member of Steve Clarke’s squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.

But with Ryan Jack still without a club, it’s unlikely Clarke will include the midfielder for the upcoming Scotland clashes.

It means there could automatically be a free place in the Scotland squad for Connor Barron to step into and Rangers fans will be willing the kid to take this next step in the game.

Rangers have a distinct lack of homegrown Scottish players in their midst with centre-back John Souttar snubbed from Clarke’s Euro 2024 squad.

Scott Wright is another Scottish option but the ex-Aberdeen winger has never been called up for his country.
