An initial inspection has been kicked back to 10:15am and we will find out the outcome of this shortly.

However, live images of the Dens Park pitch once again brings into question the standard of groundskeeping at Scottish grounds.

Beyond just the weather, the treatment of the park and the bouncing of the ball quite clearly shows a waterlogged pitch not fit for purpose.

Images of the ground staff pressing forks into the muddy ground are also a bad look for the Scottish game, even with the heavy rainfall.

Why has pitch inspection been delayed?

With the initial inspection held by local referee Craig Fordyce, the whistler has contacted the SPFL to request a later inspection.

The match’s referee Don Robertson is also eager to assess the situation and will do so when he arrives at the stadium.

The situation is a source of great frustration for a number of reasons, not least because Rangers and their legions of supporters have travelled to Dundee.

Rangers fans are now waiting patiently to see what happens with Dundee also left twiddling their thumbs until a decision is made.

Philippe Clement has been open about his criticism of the pitches in Scottish football and their impact on the national game’s product.

Make no mistake about it, a heavily waterlogged pitch suits Dundee more than it does Rangers.

With the Ibrox side out of Europe and plenty of midweeks free as a result, we’d be pushing to postpone this until later in the season.
