Rangers v Benfica – Player ratings

Philippe Clement had a few players back in the squad but, understandably, went with the same team that starting in Lisbon, this is how they scored:

Jack Butland – 7

A quiet first half saw him deal mainly with pass backs on a tricky surface.

Helpless at Benfica’s goal as his defence left him exposed.

James Tavernier – 6

Looked much more like his old self in the first half, got up to support the attack and was exceptional in defence.

Not as effective in the second half going forward.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 7

Kept World Cup winner Angel di Maria quiet as the two sides cancelled each other out.

Looked a natural against this level of opposition.

Connor Goldson – 5

Another sticky start, left runners to get in behind a couple of times and fresh aired a simple clearance. Needs a rest.

John Souttar – 7

Toss of the coin with the skipper for our best player in the first half, aggressive in the tackle and brought the ball out of defence with confidence.

John Lundstram – 4

He’s really struggled against this Benfica midfield in that he simply can’t handle how quickly they drive forward with the ball.

Gave up cheap possession on too many occasions which led to Benfica attacks.

Mohamed Diomande – 4

Constantly surrounded by Benfica players but was constantly trying to link play with those ahead of him.

Tired badly in the second half and he’ll have nights where he is more influential, we needed more energy from him.

Tom Lawrence – 5

Nearly opened the scoring after a good counter attack but the Benfica keeper got away with one.

Ball just wouldn’t sit for him as he looked to get shots away.

Scott Wright – 6

When there is space to run into, few are better in our squad, what happens when he has to do something with the ball is an entirely different matter.

A defence splitting run to play in Cyriel Dessers was the highlight of the night.

Cyriel Dessers – 4

Had to do a lot of hard running and pressing of the Benfica defence and didn’t get much service in the first half.

Fabio Silva – 5

Looked the most likely of our front three to cause problems but Rangers struggled to get him quality possession or 1v1 in and around the box.

Substitutes

Rabbi Matondo – 5

First touch went out of play when he had space to run into.

Todd Cantwell – 5

Brought on to add a spark in the final third, didn’t get a chance to.

Kemar Roofe – 5

Replaced the ineffective Dessers.
