Rangers v Dumbarton – team news confirmed, Silva and Butland benched

Rangers take the short trip up the road to face Dumbarton in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup with Philippe Clement starting to get more players back.

The forward line remains a concern but the Gers boss has added Fabio Silva who should experience his first competitive game away from Ibrox for the club.

With a huge game against a depleted Hibernian on Tuesday, Rangers could be forgiven for having one eye on Easter Road, however, Philippe Clement has still picked a strong XI from his squad to face Dumbarton.

Rangers v Dumbarton – team news confirmed

Jack Butland gets a rare afternoon off as Robbie McCrorie gets set to deal with the wind.

Connor Goldson will be a noticeable absentee against Hibs due to suspension which leaves two senior options for the trip to Edinburgh.

Leon Balogun and John Souttar have played together before and started against Hertha Berlin so there shouldn’t be any worries about them pairing up again.

To leave Goldson out for a full week probably doesn’t do him any favours though.

Midfield is where the boss has a few more options which means that he can start strong and then rotate, John Lundstram and Nicolas Raskin appear to be his first pairing with Todd Cantwell in front of them.

The latter will have to pick up his form with Tom Lawrence back fit though.

Rangers have a straight choice between Cyriel Dessers and Fabio Silva upfront and Clement might be thinking about the latter for mid-week.

That he openly admitted in the pre-match presser that he wanted to sign Silva permanently says it all about how highly he rates him.

Dessers could do with a goal or two.

Rabbi Matondo has looked sharp in the two friendlies, as has Ross McCausland, hopefully the flying pair can provide the chances to see us comfortably through to the next round.

This is who Clement has gone with in his introduction to the Scottish Cup as Rangers take on Dumbarton:

I’d imagine that, if you offered him progress to the next round, no injuries and a goal or two for Silva, he’d bite your hand off.
