Rangers pre-season form has limped into the 2024/25 campaign after two draws saw questions asked about Philippe Clement.

The manager has a squad that still needs a bit of work, however, the quality additions of Vaclav Cerny and Robin Propper make an immediate difference in the line-up – despite the latter’s early misfortune.

Here are your Rangers player ratings for the Hampden Park clash against Motherwell as the manager saw his team claim all three points.

Rangers player ratings v Motherwell

Clement will be hoping that when the real football starts that his players kick into gear and don’t switch off so often at the back, these are your ratings for today’s efforts:

Jack Butland – 6

A quiet afternoon for the big stopper and could do nothing with the comedy of errors own goal scored by Robin Propper.

James Tavernier – 6

Motherwell’s equaliser came from a hopeful cross going nowhere that John Souttar and Propper were unlucky with, however, the skipper should have got tighter and stopped it at source – a regular issue throughout his light blues career.

Was too passive in defence.

Gradually improving in possession and having more of an influence in attack.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 6

Lovely ball for Mohamed Diomande’s knockdown that gave Cyriel Dessers the chance to open the scoring.

Has made the left-back slot his own and doubts about his ability have all but disappeared, had a quieter second-half though.

Robin Propper – 7

Solid in his duels and aerially – which is why he was bought – hugely unlucky to score an own goal as he tried to nick the ball out for a corner.

An assured display on his debut.

John Souttar – 6

Should benefit from having Propper alongside him and was helpless at Motherwell’s equaliser as he stretched to clear the cross.

Left a couple of diagonal passes that he should have dealt with in the second period.

Distribution wasn’t what is expected.

Connor Barron – 8

Rarely has a player bought domestically made such an immediate impact. Looks like he has been in Rangers midfield for years.

Forming a solid partnership with Diomande.

Mohamed Diomande – 7

Was given some close attention by Motherwell’s midfield and could have moved the ball quicker at times but continues to offer a threat from his box-to-box role.

Great assist for Dessers’ opener but wasn’t as effective in the second-half.

Tom Lawrence – 5

Not really doing much wrong, however, Rangers will notice a world of difference with a more mobile number 10 who can offer a threat dribbling and running beyond the opposition defence.

Nothing seemed to fall for the playmaker and couldn’t get shots off in good positions.

Scott Wright – 5

Absolutely anonymous aside from his early effort that was cleared off the line.

What makes it worse for Wright is what Cerny was doing on the opposite side showing how far off the quality that Rangers need the former Aberdeen winger is.

Cyriel Dessers – 7

When he’s good, he’s very good.

Ronald de Boer wasn’t wrong when the big Nigeria international signed that he is either top class or amateur.

On this form, he can lead the line for Rangers but service got worse as the game went on.

Vaclav Cerny – 8

Finally, a proper winger.

One who can score goals and create chances.

Now, all we need is one for the other side too.

Substitutes

Ross McCausland – 5

Looked sharp when he came on with a couple of incisive runs but failed to pick out a teammate.

Dujon Sterling – 7

First involvement was to body a Motherwell midfielder and drive forward, the Barron, Diomande, Sterling midfield could be a popular one.

Should have scored with a header from a corner.

Rabbi Matondo – 5

No real chance to make an impact but the one time he did get the ball in open play he should have done more than shoot straight at the keeper.

Leon Balogun – 6

Dealt with a few long balls and headers in the usual manner.

Kieran Dowell – 5

Not enough time to make an impact.
