Rangers Dundee pitch call might’ve just handed Celtic surprise Old Firm advantage

Rangers’ Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee if officially called OFF – meaning Old Firm rivals Celtic could come to Ibrox in three weeks top of the table.

Rangers had gone one point behind their eternal rivals heading into the trip to Dens Park after Celtic defeated St Johnstone 3-1 at Celtic Park on Saturday.

And now the Parkhead side will be top of the league heading into a two week international break whilst the SPFL reschedule the Dundee v Rangers fixture.

Rangers’ trip to Dundee has been called off due to a water-logged Dens Park surface, with the pitch failing a final inspection from referee Don Robertson.

Images from Sky Sports surrounding the state of the Dens Park pitch had fans fearing the worst about the fixture before it was recognised by the decision.

With the ball flat bouncing on the surface and the muddy pitch ensuring a drab match, the Ibrox side will count their blessing the game has been called off.

Philippe Clement has been outspoken about the state of Scottish football’s surfaces in the past and this would’ve acted as a great leveller for Dundee on the day.

As it transpires, Rangers will have to play the game at a later date but the decision does come at the expense of the club losing top spot, if even momentarily.

Celtic to top Scottish Premiership heading into Old Firm?

Interestingly, because Rangers won’t play Dundee today it means Celtic top the Scottish Premiership heading into the final international break of the season.

Whilst a date hasn’t been chosen for the rescheduled match with Dundee as things stand, Rangers could be welcoming Celtic to Ibrox in early April’s Old Firm with the Parkhead side league leaders.

Rangers are set to host Hibs at Ibrox on March 30th before welcoming the Parkhead side to Ibrox on April 7th, with Celtic visiting Livingston on Sunday March 31st.

Should Rangers defeat Hibs, Celtic defeat Livingston, and the Dundee match fail to be rescheduled before the match, Rangers will have to defeat Celtic at Ibrox to top the Scottish Premiership.
