Connor Goldson claims Rangers teammate Oscar Cortes was “the best player on the pitch” in the first half of the Scottish Cup victory over Ayr United.

The Rangers vice-captain, 31, also heaped the praise on Cortes’s fellow new signing Mohamed Diomande who Goldson believes will be a top addition.

Manager Philippe Clement had handed the January signing pair their first starts in Rangers jerseys in the 2-0 Ibrox victory over the Honest Men.

Connor Goldson was speaking to the press following the victory and heaped the praise on Oscar Cortes, who assisted Borna Barisic’s opener.

Mohamed Diomande – who hasn’t started a competitive match since November – also showed flashes of the quality he can bring to Ibrox.

“I thought in the first half Oscar (Cortes) was the best player on the pitch,” said Connor Goldson.

“We all seen his qualities; he went both ways, he come short, he went long, he shot with both feet. I think he really showed what a valuable player he can be for us.

“(Mohamed) Diomande, I was just speaking to him then. It’s his first game since November but in training he’s showed his quality.

“I think you seen today his touch is lovely in between the lines when he wants to turn and the ball’s fired in at him.

“We need to get him up to speed as quickly as possible because I think they can both be valuable members of the squad.”

January Rangers signings start to settle

Whilst Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande were the subject of questioning here for Connor Goldson, they weren’t the only Rangers January signings who started the win over Ayr United.

Fellow new addition Fabio Silva also started the game and scored his second goal for the Ibrox side in an impressive performance at the top end of the park.

All three players have already shown flashes of their ability at Ibrox and they look like solid additions heading into the second half of the season. Philippe Clement is convinced the best is also yet to come.

Connor Goldson is a Rangers stalwart and his praise of Oscar Cortes in particular is very high indeed, especially considering the winger has only just joined the club.
