Ally McCoist was buzzing over Connor Goldson’s role in the winning Rangers goal versus Real Betis in the Europa League.
The Ibrox side defied the odds to pick up a massive 3-2 victory in Seville which sent them top of Group C and into the last 16 of the competition.
In a classic encounter, Rangers took the lead three times against the La Liga charges to eventually claim victory and inflict a first home defeat of the season on Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis.
Abdallah Sima and Cyriel Dessers – who was praised by his teammates after the game – finished brilliantly for Rangers’ first two goals of the night, before substitute Kemar Roofe was on hand to sweep home the all-important third goal. And that sent the thousands of Rangers fans in attendance wild.
Almost every Rangers star had a fantastic game but Ibrox legend McCoist was keen to highlight Goldson’s involvement to set up Roofe from close-range.

Speaking on TNT Sports alongside host Emma Dodds and Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes, McCoist explained after full-time: “(Connor) Goldson’s composure at the back post to pick out (Rabbi) Matondo is superb.
“Most people just put their foot through it but he shows, for a centre-half, incredible positioning. Isco drops his man which is poor and the ball drops to the back post.
“This second there (Connor Goldson firing the ball back into the danger zone) is absolutely top class. And I haven’t seen anything to change my opinion that Kemar Roofe is the best finisher at the club.”

As mentioned, not one man in a Light Blue jersey last night put in a bad showing. Of course, Goldson was one of them and underlined how important he can be for Rangers.
He’s perhaps attracted some doubters over the years regarding his credentials as one of the more experienced players in the Ibrox dressing room.
But his role both as a defender and a contributor to the attacks last night against Betis was crucial in Rangers’ progression to the next stage of the Europa League.
