Few out of the 50,000 or so Rangers fans that attended the 3-1 win over Ross County will have experienced a game like that and, probably, neither will have Cyriel Dessers.

The Gers number nine polarises opinion from one minute to the next but is clearly backed by manager Philippe Clement

The Rangers boss has been making best use of his squad to keep them fresh but Cyriel Dessers continues to be a player who can frustrate but also be the match winner, all in the same game, as his incredible numbers from last night prove.

Rangers matchwinner Cyriel Dessers deserves to be backed

The 29-year old is now on 14 goals and seven assists for the season, 21 goal contributions at a rate of almost one per game in terms of minutes played.

Just five minutes per goal more than Lawrence Shankland in the league, without taking penalties.

And yet…

Against Ross County, he had eight attempts at goal, scored two goals, hit the post and had one goal bound effort cleared off the line – earning a solid 9/10 on the player ratings.

Let’s be fair to the big Nigerian international for a second, he continues to get into the right positions at the right times.

Are we really still criticising a player who was centimetres off scoring a hat-trick?

Fabio Silva has two in his last two appearances and offers a different type of threat to Cyriel Dessers but Rangers having more than one striker that they can rely on can only be a good thing.

Because of his slow start to life at Ibrox, Dessers still seems to be met with the same moans and groans if he misses a chance.

For those not old enough to remember, even Ally McCoist used to miss the odd chance or two.

Is Dessers the type of striker that we thought we would be getting in the summer?

No.

But at his current rate, he will hit 20 goals and have 10 assists if his teammates do their job too.

When you consider the problems that the team experienced in the first few months of the season, it is the sort of return that could make the difference at the end of the campaign.

Dessers could yet prove to be the hero we need, even if he still seems to be the one that we don’t want.
