Rangers defender Leon Balogun was snapped in training on Tuesday with a return to action on the cards against Celtic.
The Gers are taking on the Hoops in the second Old Firm of the season tonight at Celtic Park and there’s plenty riding on the match.
A win for Gio van Bronckhorst’s side would see them open up a five-point lead at the top of the table, while victory for the visitors would see them go top.
It’s a concern that Rangers come into the game having drawn two of their last three league fixtures and the defence is under pressure after shipping three goals at Ross County on Saturday.
Goalkeeper Allan McGregor was largely at fault for two, but the Staggies’ second goal came after multiple defensive errors.
Calvin Bassey’s wild attempted clearance was the worst of them and after a strong start to life as Connor Goldson’s makeshift centre-back partner prior to the turn of the year, he’s coming in for criticism.
The manager does have the option to change things up against Celtic, though.
Balogun could return for Rangers vs Celtic
He stated during Tuesday’s press conference that while Filip Helander is not yet ready to return to action, Balogun is available once again after missing the last two matches.
And the Nigeria international could be spotted taking part in training on Tuesday, backing up his manager’s claim.
Goldson and Helander are probably Rangers’ strongest centre-back pairing but 6ft 3″ Balogun is a vastly experienced operator who has impressed in Old Firms before and he surely will come into the team in place of Bassey.
The starting XI will have a more solid look about it if the 33-year-old is named alongside the vice-captain and Balogun’s aerial prowess also makes him a threat from set pieces.
