Rangers star Alfredo Morelos' dream comes true but big night ends in disappointment

Rangers star Alfredo Morelos’ dream of playing in the Copa America was finally realised overnight, but his tournament debut would ultimately end in disappointment.

The Gers star made his senior international bow back in 2018 but a ‘dream‘ Copa America debut had eluded him for some time.

He missed out on the squad for the 2019 edition of the tournament and didn’t make the bench for the first two fixtures of the ongoing 2021 edition after recovering from Covid-19.

El Bufalo finally got the nod in a matchday squad against Peru in Goiânia overnight, though, and was introduced as a substitute.

The 24-year-old’s big moment came in the 81st minute when he came on for defender Stefan Medina with the opposition 2-1 up.

Sergio Peña had opened the scoring for Peru and although Miguel Borja equalised from the spot in the 53rd minute, a Yerry Mina own goal shortly after the hour mark put La Tricolor on the back foot once again.

Colombia ended the contest with 59% possession and created quite a few openings, getting off 12 shots on goal, but Morelos wasn’t able to make the desired impact in the final stages and a disappointing defeat was ultimately suffered.

Next up, El Bufalo and co. face tournament hosts Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

Morelos has been the subject of plenty of transfer speculation in recent days, but Rangers fans have rejected a claim about his value made by a Brazilian journalist.
