Scotland boss Steve Clarke has defended Scotland right-back Stephen O’Donnell amid criticism following the 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic and calls to instate Rangers star Nathan Patterson.

Motherwell star O’Donnell is Clarke’s preferred option in the berth with Gers rookie Patterson the national team’s back-up at Euro 2020.

O’Donnell came in for much criticism after the game for being wasteful in attack and Clarke resoundingly bit back by claiming the defender had a solid game in defence.

That’s despite the fact O’Donnell failed to block the cross for the first Czech goal at Hampden.

“Analyse the game and tell me what Stephen did wrong?” said Clarke [Glasgow Times].

“How many chances came off that side? Jakub Jankto, one of their most dangerous players, had a quiet game.

“Their left-back, a really good attacking left-back, Jan Boril, didn’t create a chance in the game.

“So analyse the game before we start killing players, just because who they are and where they play. Analyse his games when he plays for us.

“Look at his performances objectively. Just look at the games. Stephen’s first job is to be a defender. So analyse the games. That’s all I’ll say on that one.”

Rangers kid Patterson is naturally the first choice for the Ibrox support – who’re always going to back their own players – but some members of the Tartan Army also want to see the youngster involved.

Clarke came in for heavy criticism for his team selection in the match with Scotland’s defeat leaving the nation with it all do in Group E.

Ahead of Scotland’s clash with England this Friday evening, Rangers fans have been responding to the national team’s manager after his defence of O’Donnell:

Rangers fans are always going to champion Patterson and it feels like Clarke certainly bit to the criticism as he faces the pressure going into the Wembley clash.

So far only one Rangers star from five has been involved in the European Championships with coverage of this player also causing a bit of a storm amongst Gers fans.
