Rangers are counting the cost of Alfredo Morelos’ good form as the striker is called up for international duty – but a further Old Firm blow ahead of the Celtic game could yet be to come.
Gers fans are ordinarily delighted to see Alfie, 25, called up for his country and after six goals and two assists in nine appearances under van Bronckhorst the striker is back in the Los Cafeteros reckoning.
But Morelos’ recall to Reinaldo Rueda’s squad means that the striker will miss clashes with Ross County and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
As Colombia prepare for crunch World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Argentina Alfredo Morelos is likely to be eager to be involved and it certainly comes as a blow to Rangers.
However, with Kemar Roofe also in consideration for a call-up from Jamaica, Rangers could be heading into the crunch Celtic Park clash without their two main strikers.
Kemar Roofe Jamaica Old Firm blow expected as Rangers lose Alfredo Morelos to Colombia
Jamaica have a trio of pivotal World Cup Qualifiers to come at the end of the month with a trip to Panama sandwiched between home clashes against Mexico and El Salvador.
Kemar Roofe is one of several British-based players who have been called up to bolster the Reggae Boyz’ World Cup dream and if fit, the 29-year-old striker is expected to be included.
The only thing which may hamper Jamaican hopes of calling the player up is Roofe’s return from an injury lay-off and his recovery, the original issue potentially being picked up whilst turning out for the Caribbean nation.
That means Zambian international forward Fashion Sakala and Swiss international striker Cedric Itten could be the only recognised strikers in the side ahead of the Celtic Park match.
Could Cedric Itten be handed major Rangers chance v Celtic?
With Sakala speaking recently about his adaptation to playing out wide – in the mould of Cristiano Ronaldo – it means the returning Cedric Itten could be handed a huge chance up front against Celtic.
A player with his own qualities, it makes sense that Itten could be employed as the focal point at Parkhead and this could be a huge opportunity for the striker to properly announce himself at Ibrox.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst previously utilised Danish striker Nicolai Jørgensen in his Feyenoord team as the focal point and perhaps Cedric Itten can act as his Rangers version in the absence of Alfie and Kemar.
Or maybe the Dutchman will surprise Rangers fans and aim to utilise Fashion Sakala’s explosive pace on the counterattack.
Whatever the case, the loss of Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos stands as a huge blow to the Gers.
Whatever the case, Rangers aren’t the only ones who’ve been hampered by call-ups as Celtic also lose at least one key star as things stand after the fixture was rescheduled.
