Benfica are in crisis ahead of their Europa League fixture against Rangers, after a sixth player was reportedly ruled out of the clash.
The Daily Record reports that left-back, Nuno Tavares, suffered a muscle injury in training and is facing several weeks on the sidelines.
Tavares has been involved in nine of Jorge Jesus’ side’s 11 matches so far this season and he played the first 45 minutes of their 3-3 draw with the Gers in Lisbon earlier in the month.
The Portugal U21 international is one of four Benfica stars set to miss the game through injury, with Andre Almeida, Jean-Clair Todibo and Pedrinho all already out of action.
Jesus’ problems aren’t confined to the treatment room, though, with star striker, Darwin Nuñez, and defensive midfielder, Julian Weigl, both also out after testing positive for Covid-19.
Nuñez inspired his side’s second-half comeback at the Estadio da Luz earlier in the month, notching a goal and an assist off the bench, while he also scored for Uruguay in a win over Alfredo Morelos’ Colombia last week.
Even with so many players missing, the Portuguese side will still pose the Gers plenty of problems at Ibrox.
However, Steven Gerrard’s men defeated both Porto and Braga on home turf last season and a victory next Thursday would see them pull clear at the top of Group D.
