Rangers’ opponents Benfica have reportedly suffered a major double blow ahead of their trip to Ibrox for a Europa League group stage fixture next Thursday.
Publico claims that Darwin Nuñez and Julian Weigl have both tested positive for Covid-19.
The Portuguese outlet asserts that both players are out of contention for Benfica’s clash with Paredes in the Taça de Portugal on Saturday night.
Given that the Rangers fixture is only six days away, it is also set to come too soon for the duo.
Nuñez appears to have picked up the virus on international duty with Uruguay, given that he played and scored against Alfredo Morelos’ Colombia last Friday.
The high-profile striker was instrumental to Benfica’s comeback when they took on the Gers in Lisbon earlier in the month, as he came off the bench to score and notch an assist in a 3-3 draw.
Defensive midfielder, Weigl, isn’t quite as instrumental to Jorge Jesus’ side, but he is a Germany international and he played the full 90 minutes of that game.
Rangers will hope that they aren’t faced by similar problems following the international break, with a big Premiership fixture against Aberdeen coming up on Sunday before the Portuguese giants come to town.
