Once £35m-rated Euro rival pips Gers icon to prestigious UEFA award despite contribution

Frankfurt counterpart pips Rangers star to prestigious UEFA award

Rangers star James Tavernier has missed out on the UEFA Europa League Player of the Season as Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic wins the battle of the flying wingbacks.

The two players have been the standouts in the competition and have driven their respective sides forward to the Final in Seville.

But it’s the Serbian who has been recognised as the best player in the competition after his decisive assist hauled Eintracht Frankfurt back into the match against Rangers.

With Joe Aribo putting Rangers in front Filip Kostic dug out on a cross from the left and Rafael Santos Borre nipped in between Connor Goldson and Calvin Bassey to equalise.

The goal was decisive and forced the game to extra time before two sets of tired players eventually went through the wringer and a penalty shoot-out.

Whilst James Tavernier scored his spot kick, so did Filip Kostic, and perhaps it’s the Serbian’s contribution in the Final that nudged him in front of the Rangers captain.

Rangers star Tavernier wound up the competition’s top scorer (7) with Kostic the top assister (6), with the Rangers skipper having nine goal contributions in total and Kostic the same.

It’s little wonder the Frankfurt star has been linked with a £35m exit in the past [Bild] and the 29-year-old possesses such quality he could be at the top of some shopping lists this summer.

The UEFA Europa League Young Player of the Season also went to a Frankfurt star as Ansgar Knauff was rewarded for his performances in the competition.

Rangers fans might’ve hoped to have seen Calvin Bassey given the award but as it wasn’t to be for the Ibrox side on the night this might just have nudged it in the German youth international’s favour.

There was some saving grace for both Rangers stars, as James Tavernier and Calvin Bassey made the official UEFA Europa League Team of the Season.

They weren’t the only ones either as a leading Rangers star who has stolen headlines and dreams across Europe throughout the competition also made the cut.
