Three things we’ve learned from Ross Wilson to Nottingham Forest link

Rangers director Ross Wilson’s shock link with a return to the Premier League and Nottingham Forest has raised a few eyebrows.

What the Wilson to Forest story has also done, is see more than a few Rangers fans reaching for their car keys as they offer to drive our sporting director back to England.

Wilson’s track record across his role is up for debate when you consider that he is ultimately responsible for every team across the club, the coaches and the players.

It isn’t quite as simple as this, of course, and there are areas where his experience in the Premier League has been key in improving our infrastructure.

Ross Wilson also deserves huge credit for the fees that Rangers have brought in during his tenure even if this is balanced by the prospect of losing key players for nothing this summer.

What three things have we learned about Wilson’s rumoured move to Forest?

Rangers fans think that recruitment will immediately improve

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it wasn’t all down to Wilson whether or not players were good or bad, although gambles like Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo last January didn’t do him any favours.

The recruitment team, based up of scouts and analysts as well as coaching and management staff, will all have had their say, at every level of Rangers.

It is always a team effort.

Ross Wilson is still highly respected in the richest league in the world

If Wilson wasn’t doing a good job, there is no way that a club with deep pockets in one of Europe’s top five leagues would consider head hunting him, especially one in Forest’s position.

We don’t really know what Ross Wilson’s role is

There has been engagement before with the sporting director, but not for a while, and the criticism of Wilson is symptomatic of a board who refuse to open up and bring greater clarity to what is going on behind the scenes.

Rangers were a couple of penalties away from immortality last May and an Old Firm win at Ibrox from retaining the Scottish Premiership title to guarantee Champions League qualification.

Football, where the finest of margins define success, failure and the perception of one man.
