Rangers to play Europa League outfit and meet one-time target - report

Rangers are set to face off against Ligue 1 Stade Rennais in a friendly at Ibrox as part of the club’s pre-season preparations.

That’s according to a French journalist, who also announced plans for Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa to play Rennes in France.

In the tweet, journalist Christophe Penven claims to have the inside track on Rennes’ pre-season schedule with matches against Villa, Rangers and Caen on the horizon.

Whilst the details are sparse, and there has been no official communication from either Rangers or Stade Rennais, Penven claims the match will take place in July.

There’s no reason for us not to believe this is true and if it does come to fruition this would be the second friendly at Ibrox confirmed so far this pre-season.

Rangers have already confirmed a match with English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the new campaign.

Rangers to host Stade Rennais at Ibrox?

Stade Rennais will pose interesting opposition for Rangers as they look to mount an assault on the Champions League this season.

Having reached the Europa League Final this campaign the Ibrox side came agonisingly close to automatic qualification for Europe’s elite competition but will now have to navigate two sets of qualifiers to make the tournament.

In contrast, Rennes have already qualified for the Europa League group stages courtesy of their impressive season in Ligue 1 where they finished 3rd.

This was in no small part down to the influence of Croatian playmaker Lovro Majer; a name which may be familiar to some Rangers fans.

Rangers were extensively linked to Majer, 24, during his time with Dinamo but the midfielder instead moved to Rennes as the Ibrox club were priced out.

The French side reportedly paid £13m (€15m) [Foot Mercato] to take the Croatian international to the club last summer and this season Majer racked up six goals and eight assists in 29 Ligue 1 appearances.

If the friendly comes to fruition, Rangers will get a glimpse up close as to why so many fans were desperate for the club to move in 2020.

Meanwhile, Rangers have handed deals to an ex-Man City talent and a leading Academy goalkeeper.
