Rangers lose to World Legends as Gazza scores and wins Man of the Match

Rangers Legends have lost 3-2 to a World Legends side at Ibrox this afternoon as the club marked its 150th anniversary in style.

In front of a fantastic crowd of just over 38,000 at Ibrox, there was a carnival atmosphere around the ground as the legends rolled back the years once and Alex McLeish managed the Gers one more time.

With a host of superstars on display, fans were treated to a surprisingly entertaining game as both sides had their moments – although it was Luis Figo’s World XI who had the best of the chances in the opening 45.

The visitors hit both posts and were denied by a series of saves from Ronald Wattereus as some of the greatest names to have played the game lit up Ibrox – albeit at a slightly slower pace than at their peak.

Ricardo Quaresma peppered the Rangers goal with efforts from the outside of his boot, with little joy, while Roy Makaay went close with a strike at goal from the edge of the area.

Rangers had the ball in the net through Kris Boyd midway through the opening 45 only for an offside flag to deny him the opener.

As the entertaining first-half drew to a close, Arveladze broke the deadlock with a stunning header from de Boer’s cross; the Georgian showing great agility to get on the end of de Boer’s ball into the area and head the ball into the top corner.

After a raft of changes for both sides at the break, both sides looked pretty different for the second 45 and the game was much more open than the first period.

Brazilian maestro Kaka completed cracked the ball off the crossbar with a lovely effort moments before Carlos Marchena headed home from close range after a lofted pass into the area from the former AC Milan and Real Madrid superstar.

As the game reached the hour mark, the scoreline was turned on its head as World Legends took the lead, Nuno Gomes lifting the ball over Neil Alexander with a delightful finish to make it 2-1.

World Legends made it 3-1 in the last 10 minutes, Quaresma finally finding the net with the outside of his right boot after countless attempts throughout the afternoon.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for the introduction of Paul Gascoigne as the nine-in-a-row legend made his long-awaited return to Ibrox after years of health problems, coming on for the final five minutes before scoring a late, late goal and winning man of the match.
